Any female skaters ages 18+ who are interested should attend.

This is a great way to learn some of the things you will need to know and work on when we have our workshops Spring/Summer of 2011 for our yearly try outs.

Her skill and confidence on the track were key components in the Warning Belles’ successful first season. Naptown Roller Girl Noxious Donna gives us the lowdown on what gets her going—and offers a preview of this weekend’s bout with Bloomington’s Bleeding Heartland.

How did you become involved with the Naptown Roller Girls?

I used to work for the local alternative paper, NUVO Newsweekly, promoting events and online stuff. I did a bunch of silly “things to do in Indy” Youtube videos and came up with the crazy idea that I would subject myself to an NRG practice for one day. I had been to a few bouts before, so I was vaguely aware of what I was getting in to. Emphasis on vaguely.

Were you much of an athlete before that?

Nope. I was big in to show choir and theatre in high school. Never played sports. I had dabbled in horseback riding, swimming, and softball but gave up on those almost instantly. I was wimpy and whiny. In college, I picked up running and yoga, but nothing resembling a team sport.

People often think small skater = jammer. And at the beginning of last season, you almost exclusively wore the jammer star for the Warning Belles. Then we started seeing you in the pack more often, sometimes even wearing the pivot panty. When did that transition happen? And why?

I wish I knew! One day Diane Beatin' handed me the pivot panty instead of the jammer panty. I trust my coaches to put me where I'll do best, and I never asked why. Although I've definitely gotten better at hitting. Let's go with that. I'm a badass hitter, and most girls don't expect it from me because I'm tiny.

What percentage of your game is physical versus mental?

I don't really get into the whole meditate-and-psych-myself-up-before-the-big-game thing. I let the negative and positive thoughts come and go as they please. Mainly I just try to set myself up to succeed by eating right, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. I don't drink or smoke, and I'm a vegetarian. I know if my body is happy, then my mind can focus on what it needs to.

What surprises you most about this sport?

How, with everything else that may be going on in your life, you can always make time for derby. You have to. It's an obsession and an addiction that affects every part of your life in ways you never thought it could. And it's a great conversation starter.

In the real world, do you find that people regard you differently when they find out that you are a roller girl?

I recently went back to my hometown for a wedding, and that's all anyone asked me about. Not my job, not my relationship ... just derby. I think I just shock people when I tell them I play derby. I'm kinda small, I dress girly, and I'm pretty quiet. Hell, I surprise myself sometimes when I stop and think about it.

A Q&A with Tornado Siren Blazin' Ace

Blink and you might miss one of Blazin’ Ace’s lightening moves. As a jammer, she wows the crowd with her flamingo-footed passes on the inside line and rapid-fire cuts through the pack—but the seasoned Tornado Siren is also a working example of the league’s aim to “play smarter, not harder.” As Naptown’s Nov. 7 season opener draws near, the rocket-powered Tornado Siren talks about how she came to be a Naptown Roller Girl and what keeps her one.

How long have you been skating?

I strapped on my first pair of skates when I was 8 and skated every weekend till I was about 16. I picked up skating again when I tried out for NRG at the age of 28.

How did you hook up with the Naptown Roller Girls?

It was a twist of fate. A local radio station was promoting an upcoming bout, but I wasn’t able to attend. So I got on the NRG Web site and contacted Strawberry Jam the next day to let her know I was interested. As fate would have it, tryouts were in two days. The rest is history.

What drew you to this sport?

I freakin’ love to skate!

What have been some of the biggest changes you have seen in the league since you came onboard in the first season?

The biggest change I’ve seen has been in the management of the league. In the early days, it seemed like the league was run by a few skaters. Now every skater on the team has a job, and we are held accountable for our participation. It gives every skater a sense of ownership in the league and a sense of pride in being part of this unparalleled organization.

Do the new girls seem to be a different breed than that original crew?

Any woman who wants to give derby a try is of a different breed! I’m always so impressed with our Fresh Meat skaters. Their determination and desire to prove themselves inspires the rest of the team (rookies and vets) to skate faster, hit harder, play smarter.

What does it take to be good at this?

The ability to take a beating from your friends and not harbor ill feelings about it later! Other than that, it takes a lot of patience, drive, and confidence in yourself.

Is there one bout that you are really looking forward to this season?

I haven’t competed since June, so I’m counting the days till our first bout against Bloomington! What more can you ask for in derby than two in-state teams that have trained and practiced their hearts out to see who is best on the flat track. It’s going to be exciting!

The Sirens Take a Hit in Sioux Falls

The Tornado Sirens traveled to the icy tundra of eastern South Dakota to meet the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz in the host team’s Oct. 10 season opener. The seven-hour commute by air and highway was the farthest commute in Naptown history, a sign of the Sirens’ determination to venture well outside of their comfort zone and take the league into exciting new territory.

The action at Sioux Falls fairgrounds began with Katya Lookin on the jammer line beside Queen Elizabitch of Sioux Falls. While Katya struggled to get through the pack, Queen cleared NRG’s starting lineup of blockers—4 Leaf Cleaver, Ana Slays Ya, Sweet C, and Ima Hurchu—to rack up the first five points of the night. Naptown’s jammers fought hard for every point in the first half, and the blockers adjusted their strategy to counteract the Dollz’ darting speed and sure-footedness. Cleaver, C, and Psychedelic Sandy plowed into blockers, and Cereal Killer in the role of pivot orchestrated some beautiful plays that would have shut down a lesser team. But the Dollz simply (and literally) would not go down.

When the scoreboard at halftime showed Sioux Falls in the lead with 37 points to Naptown’s 23, the Sirens ramped up their resolve and rolled out of the locker tent with fire in their bellies. The second half saw several impressive performances by Sirens’ newcomer Dora the Destroyer, who lived up to her nickname’s nickname, “The Gazelle,” as she darted around the Sioux Falls blockers to gain lead jammer nearly every time she wore the star, even when she shared the jammer line with the Dollz power skater, Inspectah Beck. Every time double-threat Shadi Layne rolled onto the track, she did it like a warrior going into battle—whether skating within the pack as blocker or cannonballing right through it as jammer. The ladies of NRG were in fighting form, and the 439 fans gathered in the Sioux Falls barn that night were treated to some great derby, including a dramatic final jam by Katya—who lapped the pack with her arms in the official lead jammer “L.”

Nevertheless, NRG never was able to gain the lead. The final score of 96 to 61 was in Sioux Falls’ favor, a heartbreaking though illuminating loss for the ladies of NRG, who will meet the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz again in March—but next time it will be on home turf.

Q&A with Katya Lookin

The power and passion that Katya Lookin brings to the derby track is the stuff of Hollywood sports films. Take note, Drew Barrymore. In her first season, the Naptown standout gained the respect of fans and teammates alike—as a fearless leader who isn’t afraid to roll up her sleeves and get the job done herself.

What kind of sports background do you have?

As a kid, I played all kinds of recreational league sports like basketball and softball. I swam on the local swim team, but I loved soccer the most. I took a long break from athletics while I was in high school to pursue a good college, and again in college to pursue trouble, and when I was done with college I had to pursue a good job. I eventually realized that not moving my body wasn't cutting it for me, and working out at the gym sucks if I don't have a "reason." So I started playing hockey. I've also studied Tae Kwon Do and ashtanga yoga, and I had a very brief run-in with rugby.

How did that segue to roller derby?

When I saw my first NRG bout, I was blown away by what was happening on the track. I thought to myself, "I bet I can do that." It was the combination of hockey and rugby that did it to me. I knew I could skate fast on ice—how different could this be? And I've been tackled by some serious goons with no protection but a mouth guard—really would this hurt so bad? Ha! By the time I realized what I'd really gotten myself into, I was already in too deep.

NRG fans get to watch you tear up the track as a powerful jammer and blocker. What they don't get to see is you in the locker room just before the bout, firing up the team with one of your electrifying pep talks. Where does that come from?

I am passionate, and I like to share. I learned about the importance of pep when I was playing a house league championship soccer game. I was one of the oldest girls on the team and good friends with the coach's daughter, so I slipped into a leadership-like role. We were getting whipped, having let two goals by in the first 15 minutes. Here we were, the last game of the season, people were getting upset, and there were some tears on the field. It sucked for me to see everyone stop doing what they loved because of the score, and we still had a lot of game left to play. I let everyone know this was about having fun and kicking the crap out of our opponents (figuratively) regardless of how that played out on the scoreboard. Well, hell, we came back and annihilated them 5 to 2. I believe in the power of personal fire. And at the risk of sounding hokey, I'm honored that the team gives me their ear before a bout.

Are there any new skills or special tricks you've been working on for the new season?

It’s a Hard Knock Life: Touretta Lynn and NRG Tryouts

Your chance to join the ranks of Indy’s own roller derby superstars, the Tornado Sirens and Warning Belles, comes on Nov. 15, when the ladies of NRG invite any and all aspiring derby girls to lace up their skates and put their skills to the test in Naptown’s next round of tryouts.

Never even played the sport, you say? Don’t you worry.

To get you good and ready for the challenge, we’re throwing in a complimentary session of Touretta Lynn’s School of Hard Knocks. In two adrenalin-packed hours before tryouts, you’ll get individual instruction from one of Naptown’s leading ladies. You’ll find out how to execute a powerful crossover, how to run out of the turns, how to roll with the pack, and how it feels to get hit by 115 pounds of fishnet and fury.

Ready to show us what you got?

First, you will need to purchase your own gear. This includes quad skates, kneepads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a mouth guard, and most importantly, a helmet. It is a good idea to get these items early and practice skating in them. They can be purchased at most local sports stores or skate shops in the area. You can also purchase items from online retailers such as, our sponsor, www.SinCitySkates.com. They have Rookie deals or packages that are all-inclusive and may save you some money. Sin City also has a great blog with lots of information about skate types, wheel types, and gear specifics. So don’t forget to read up before you buy!

What else can you do to get ready?

1. START SKATING NOW! There are lots of rinks in the area such as Wheels of Wonder, USA Roller Skating Center, Southland Skate Center, Roller Cave, and Franklin Skate Club. Check online for times and locations of open-skates near yo

2. GET IN SHAPE. Being a roller girl is a serious athletic commitment. You should start eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and exercising regularly. Start taking care of your body and don’t be afraid to talk to a fitness or health professional about what is right for you.

3. LEARN THE RULES and SKILL REQUIREMENTS. NRG is currently a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The current set of WFTDA rules along with information on the minimum set of skill requirements needed can be found on the WFTDA website at http://wftda.com/rules.html.

4. KEEP INFORMED. Stay tuned to this website and come to our events (and introduce yourself!). Please have all of your gear (skates, pads, mouth guards) before you come to skate! No Gear—No Skate!!

You will need to bring your own skates and safety equipment for tryouts. You should wear comfortable workout-style clothes and bring lots of water. You will also need to bring tennis shoes always for off-skate activities.

Last season, you watched her glide around the track wearing the jammer panty for the Warning Belles. This year, Racer Xtasy steps it up a notch, applying her speed to the Tornado Sirens’ Sioux Falls roster. Here, a chat with one of Naptown’s rising stars.

Not quite a year into your time with Naptown Roller Girls and you are on the roster for your first WFTDA-sanctioned bout. How does that feel?

Wow, I hadn't even really thought about that, to tell you the truth. The Belles always don our WFTDA patches on our jerseys, so it always seems like I'm playing a WFTDA-sanctioned bout. I guess now I have the opportunity to play in bouts that will determine our ranking and national presence, and when put that way, I have to admit it makes me a bit nervous.

Are you doing anything different to prepare for a sanctioned bout over the bouts you played last year?

Having a season under my belt, I'm able to focus more on things I want to improve. Also, I continue to cross-train outside of derby, which helps with my endurance during bouts.

You are about to play in a bout in Sioux Falls, South Dakota—the farthest afield Naptown has ever traveled. How is playing an away bout different from playing at home?

Playing away is fun. It gives us a chance to represent the league and meet new people. I won't prepare any differently than I do before a home bout—except I'll make sure to pack wheel options because you never know what the skating floor is going to be like at other venues. And yay for flying! This is going to be a fun experience.

How do you feel about your jamming skills going into season two after being named "Jammer of the Year" for the Belles?

I was honored to win the Jammer of the Year award. It was a great way to end the season. That and having played a few bouts now adds to my confidence on the track, which is critical for jammers. With that being said, I'm pretty confident in my jamming skills going into the new season, especially knowing I have a strong pack to support me.

Indianapolis, IN – The wheeled women of the Naptown Roller Girls are set to take on Bloomington, Indiana’s Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls on Nov. 7, 2009—kicking off the fourth full season for Indy’s premier flat-track roller derby team. Some 3,000-plus fans are expected to swarm the Pepsi Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the double-header event, which will feature NRG’s veteran Tornado Sirens, as well as its junior-varsity Warning Belles teams.

The storm is coming …
Blurred visions of tattoos, fishnets and skates and the blood-curdling screams of sirens can mean only one thing: The Naptown Roller Girls have arrived. The Tornado Sirens and the Warning Belles are the competing roller derby teams for Indy’s premier flat-track roller derby league.
With six home bouts scheduled for the fourth season and season ticket packages now available, The Tornado Sirens and the Warning Belles are ready to prove to Indianapolis and the world that roller derby isn’t just a bunch of fights and flash; it’s the coolest sport there ever was for women.

And with the new season, come changes…
Because of the ever-increasing crowds at NRG’s events, the league is excited to announce it will be moving into the Pepsi Coliseum for its fourth season of bouts. This change in venue will offer derby guests a chance to spread out and get comfortable while watching their favorite gals storm the track.

Because of this move, individual tickets prices will increase. Single bout tickets are $12 advance, $17 at the door. Single bout tickets for Nov. 7 go on sale Oct. 1, 2009.

To make up for the increase in cost, however, NRG has sweetened its season ticket package deal.

Guests who purchase season ticket packages will receive early entry to each of our home season bouts, plus:

* A 2009-2010 Naptown Roller Girls calendar, autographed by each of the lovely ladies themselves.
* An official NRG tote stuffed with an assortment of NRG stickers, buttons and other goodies.

To make getting into each bout as easy as possible, NRG will provide season ticketholders with their very own badge with their name printed on it. This badge and the complementary merch bag will be available for pickup at the Season Ticket table at the first bout. Guests need to only pick up their badge once to get entry into each of the six bouts of the season.

So who are we?
The Naptown Roller Girls, and its competing teams, The Tornado Sirens and The Warning Belles, are made up of Indianapolis women who want to do one thing: SKATE. Formed in 2006, The Naptown Roller Girls are a DIY flat-track roller derby league, one of more than 200 flat- and banked-track roller derby leagues around the country. Our ladies have collected bruises, torn tendons, dislocated shoulders and broken bones to bring roller derby in all its grit and glory to the Indianapolis area.

The Naptown Roller Girls league is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the national governing body for women’s amateur flat-track roller derby in the U.S. WFTDA member=2
0leagues engage in sanctioned interleague play, including regional and national tournaments.

What is roller derby?
Roller derby consists of two teams of five skaters each on the track. Each team has one scoring player called a jammer, who starts at the back and wears a star on her helmet. The rest of the skaters are called blockers, and they form a pack. The blockers get a head start on the jammers when the first whistle is blown; the jammers start sprinting at the sound of the second whistle. The jammers have to get through the pack and back around another lap before they can start scoring. On their second and future trips through the pack, the jammers earn a point for every opponent they legally pass. Everyone else tries to stop the other teams’ jammer from passing while helping their own jammer through. The team with the most points at the end of the bout wins. Each bout is made up of two 30-minute periods.

The track at Toyota Exposition Hall was engulfed in competition when the Naptown Roller Girls hosted its second double-header of the season on June 13, an action-packed nail-biter with the Ohio Roller Girls of Columbus. Burning Rink of Fire, the league’s last home bout of the 2008-09 season, featured the Warning Belles taking on Ohio’s Gang Green squad in the first bout, followed by the Tornado Sirens skating against the OHRG All Stars. Bout One: The Belles The Ohio team brought a small roster—with four skaters competing in both the Belles’ and Sirens’ bouts. But endurance and teamwork proved mighty weapons for this team, which came out strong from the very beginning of the Belles’ bout. Racer Xtasy launched off the jammer line at the first whistle, and fellow wearers of the star—Blue Messiah, Ivanna B. Naughty, Katya Lookin, and Valerie Hurtinelli—rounded up enough points to put the Belles in the lead at halftime, if only slightly so at 27 to 20. The second half brought more of a challenge for Naptown’s B Team. Ohio jammer Hellion BOI came out of the break with a tide-turning 9-0 jam, giving her team the lead. Naptown’s pack struggled to control Ohio’s aggressive blockers and our jammers took some rattling blows from Gang Green’s last line of defense, often in the form of the green team’s Nailher and captain Handle Barz. In spite of high-scoring jams by a battle-worn Blue Messiah, and a few of Katya’s inspiring turns wearing the star, the Belles saw their lead slip away with every tick of the game clock. By bout’s end, the scoreboard read 64 to 31 in Ohio’s favor.

Bout Two: The Sirens The headline bout of the night had Naptown’s A Team trading blows with a squad that included Columbus’ top players. A low-scoring first half featured strong jams by Blazin’ Ace, Fin Addict, Slammy Faye, and Jane Ire—who seemed especially adept at carving out holes in this, the final home bout of her Naptown career. In the last jam of the first half, Ace powered through the Ohio pack to give the Sirens a14-point lead at halftime. Both teams came back strong after intermission. Ohio jammer Dirty Grrl displayed mad skating skills, nearly tap dancing through NRG’s pack to help the All Stars gain points—and momentum. Small back-and-forth gains kept the crowd on edge, knowing that one big jam could put either team in a comfortable lead. Unfortunately for Naptown fans, that break came when Ohio’s Pippi RipYourStocking slipped on the jammer cap and worked her way past the Sirens’ hardest hitters. In one pivotal jam, she pulled off a 13-point double grand slam that put her team in the lead at 61 to 60. Points were hard to come by in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the level of excitement was at its highest pitch. Fans who thought they would never see a bout as close as May’s Cyclone Wars were in for another thrill. In spite of valiant performances by the Naptown blockers (including one containment effort that sent Joan of Dark careening into the suicides, leaving skate marks on the “God is a Naptown fan” sign), and a final jam by crowd favorite Shadi Layne, the Sirens managed to rack up only two points in the last five jams. In the end, it wasn’t enough to avoid a 66-62 victory for Ohio.

NRG’s first-ever double-header on May 30 gave fans their tickets’ worth and more, as the Tornado Sirens and Warning Belles took on the Fort Wayne Derby Girls Bomb Squad and S.W.A.T. Team. With both leagues known for their fierce derby skills and competitive souls, Cyclone Wars had all the makings for an evening of epic entertainment (including the ominous presence of the 501st Legion and the Midwest Base of the Rebel Legion, in their fully costumed Star Wars tribute).

Episode One: The Phantom Menace

The first bout of the double header had the Belles going up against Fort Wayne’s S.W.A.T. Team. In typical Belles form, the bout featured the confident jamming of Racer Xtasy and Blue Messiah, the powerful hits of Psychedelic Sandy and newcomer pivot Ima Hurchu, and the double-blocker and jammer threat passion of team captain Katya Lookin. Three jams into the bout, the Belles had a 10-point lead, with a score of 16 to 6. A series of grand slams racked up the points for Naptown’s B team in the first period, the final jam of which ended with three S.W.A.T. players in the box and Katya lead jamming to a fist-pumping 9 to 0 tally.

When the Belles huddled up for a quick halftime chat, they vowed to ignore their clear lead in the 67 to 34 halftime score and instead treat the second half of the bout as a whole new game. The ladies kept their promise, never giving up the lead. The blockers cleared wide paths, sending a couple of the Fort Wayne players into the suicides, so that the Naptown jammers could slip through for grand slam-plus scores. At the end of the bout, the final scoreboard declared a 119 to 66 win for the Belles.

Episode Two: The Empire Strikes Back

By the second round of Cyclone Wars, real-life severe weather was ripping through Central Indiana, beyond the walls of the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion. However, none of that was nearly as ominous as the sight of the Tornado Sirens rolling onto the track to meet the Bomb Squad for the first time since Fort Wayne beat them in the second bout of their first season, Hoosier Valentine. But that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. And the Sirens had trained hard to prepare for this important rematch.

From the first jam whistle, it was clear to everyone in the house that the Naptown A Team would need to bring its A Game. Repeatedly, Fort Wayne’s fluid jammers and offensive blockers meant trouble for even Naptown’s strongest skaters. While fans might have been unaccustomed to the concept of Blazin’ Ace struggling to get lead jammer or the Twin Towers breaking into a sprint after an elusive opposing star, the bout was undeniably good derby. Clearly, both squads were playing their hearts out: Sweet C knocked a girl out of her skates five minutes into the bout; Fort Wayne jammers RIP Tide and Pushycat pulled off some lightening-fast laps; and the blocking trio of 4Leaf Cleaver, Joanie Gouge, and Cereal Killer formed a Bermuda Triangle that made Fort Wayne jammers disappear.

Through it all, the point spread was never wide enough for either team’s comfort. Fort Wayne had secured the lead at halftime, but the Sirens came back with fresh fire. When Shadi Layne slipped the jammer panty on her helmet for her first jam and delivered one of the most powerful and inspiring performances of the entire bout—in spite of its 0-0 outcome—the crowd was on its feet. Toward the nail-biting end of the second half, the points for both teams remained in the 60s and 70s, with Naptown and Fort Wayne jockeying back and forth for the lead and the penalty box (under the brand-new WFTDA 4.0 rules set) getting plenty of visitors wearing jerseys of both colors.

But in the end, the surprising final-jam placement of Cereal Killer on the jammer line (on the heals of a spectacular double-jam performance by Ace) against the unstoppable RIP Tide took this bout to a higher level of play—and suspense. The jam started with the scoreboard reading 78 to 65 in Naptown’s favor. With CK struggling to get through the pack and lead jammer RIP having already lapped it, the Siren jammer took a back block from RIP, a major foul that sent the helpless Fort Wayne jammer to the box for the remainder of the heart-pumping closer that ended in a 78 to 70 score and a Naptown win.

The Tornado Sirens Deliver The Southern Brutality

The Naptown Roller Girls' veteran team, the Tornado Sirens, showed the Dixie Derby Girls the North's definition of Southern Brutality with a 164-25 win in Huntsville, Alabama on April 18. This was DDG's season opener, and both teams entered the track in great form; skating their way through smoke and dimmed lights for team introductions. Once the initial whistle blew, though, the lights were on and the action was intense. Naptown took control of the bout immediately, obtaining an ever-growing lead they'd feed all night. NRG jammers obtained lead jammer status 14 out of 18 jams to control the period, and where the Siren's speediest left off, NRG's heavy hitters took over. Sweet C made several seriously sweet hits, sending one DDG skater into the Sirens' bench, while Sin Lizzie, J Roller, 4 Leaf Cleaver and the rest of the blocking crew put the stop to DDG's jamming team on a regular basis. By halftime, the score was 78 to 13 in NRG's favor.

The second period saw more on-your-feet action. But what no one expected? Two jammerless jams in a row. Both teams had their jammers sent to the box for penalties. NRG's J Roller quickly donned the jammer cap to cover for Ivanna B. Naughty's position at the jammer line. But soon after the jammer whistles blew, both jammers were again sent to the box. Only Sweet C, Sin Lizzie, and Touretta Lynn were left standing on the track, and Touretta Lynn, a blocker through and through, did something her team never thought she'd do: She put on a jammer cap. Overall, the bout saw several twists and turns, including lots of hard hits and dramatic falls from both teams and great performances from Katya Lookin and Joanie Gouge, the newest additions to the Sirens team. But, in the end, Naptown delivered the final assault, bringing home another win by more than 100 points for the second week in a row. Final score 164 - 25.

This is an area where KIB has been spending significant time over the past two years, as the residents and school are interested in cleaning the area up and building community and greenspace to improve the quality of life! The Sirens Sound Off over Green Country

Naptown hosted the Green Country Roller Girls of Tulsa, Okla., on April 11 in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion. This night-before-Easter bout had Blazin’ Ace on the line for Jam One, poised to score a fist-pumping 13 points to Tulsa’s zero, an opening act that had Naptown fans on their feet with their foam fingers in the air.

The first period saw similar jammer fireworks: Jane Ire slipping through the pack to score 14 points; Slammy Faye sneaking nine points to the Green Country lead jammer’s four; Fin Addict fighting through the GCRG resistance to add three points to the board before calling off the jam—sliding backwards on her toe stops. All the while, Naptown’s precision pack made the jammers’ job look easy, with Sin Lizzie, Cereal Killer, Mizz Understood, and the Twin Towers doing much of the smacking down. Even with a few hitches in their giddy up—Ace in the box and Touretta Lynn temporarily sidelined with a broken skate—Naptown had a nice lead going into the period break with the scoreboard reading 24 to 79.

Green Country made a valiant attempt to make up some ground in the second half—namely in the form of uber jammer Rosie the Wrecker, whose tireless, rapid-fire performance was nothing short of an inspiration to roller girls everywhere. But the Tulsa crew never did take control of the scoreboard. NRG, on the other hand, lit it up. Final score: 36 to 160 for a Sirens win!

The Belles Settle the Score in Evansville

The Demolition City Roller Derby of Evansville opened the doors of historic Memorial Coliseum for an April 4 double-header, Two for Flinchin’. Naptown fans toted their “Need More Belles” signs to the Southern Indiana venue and put them to good use as NRG’s B team paid a return visit to the A-team Dynamite Dolls (representing the league that gave the Belles their first and only defeat four months ago at Dismembered December). Having matured as skaters and gelled as a team, the 14-girl roster hit the masonite track with full force, scoring four points to Demo City’s zero in the first jam, and setting a trend for the rest of the bout.

DCRD brought some storied players to the dance—stealthy Hazardous Dooks, speedy Godjilla, and sure-footed Shelby N. Pain on the jammer line, with blocker Clara Plegic forming a one-person wall at the back of the E-ville pack. The Belles answered with a cohesive pack built upon the wisdom of Jen X, the agility of Ana Slays Ya, and the fierce right hip of Psychedelic Sandy. Superstar jams by Blazin' Ace, Katya Lookin, Racer Xtasy, Ivanna B. Naughty, et al kept Naptown in a comfortable lead during the first period, which ended with a 76-29 score in the Belles’ favor.

Demo City came back after the halftime breather with some fire in its step, delivering some power hits that turned a few of the Belles into projectiles. NRG gave up a few lead jams and had to play smart to contain Shelby and Godjilla nearly every time they wore the star. But they rose to the challenge, playing hard until the final jam and rolling away with a 117 to 52 victory.

Goodness Gracious - Great Brawls of Fire

The Naptown Roller Girls put up a fierce fight against the 20th ranked Arch Rivals Roller Girls of St. Louis during the March 21st bout in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion, Great Brawls of Fire. The Tornado Sirens’ jamming contingent—fully charged with the return of Blazin’ Ace and Slammy Faye—came out skating (and hitting) hard against the Arch Rivals’ well-oiled defensive machine. It was anyone’s bout for the first period, with Naptown trailing by just two points with one jam to go before the halftime whistle. But St. Louis had one more power jam up its pink sleeve—a 10-point scorcher that took the halftime score to 45 to 33 in its favor.

ARRG kept its lead for the remainder of the bout, in spite of an inspired NRG offense and huge, deficit-shaving jams in the second period. Both teams put on fantastic shows of strength and strategy. The fight to the finish ended in a score of 93 to 60, with St. Louis going home with the win.

The Belles Win In Lexington

The Warning Belles brought home a bucket of Southern-fried victory from their March 15 bout in Lexington. Taking on the Rollergirls of Central Kentucky on their wood-floor home turf, the Naptown team took an early lead against a hard-hitting opponent, lead jamming and grand slamming to a halftime score of 75 to 20 in NRG’s favor.

ROCK connected with several molar-rattling hits, but the Belles kept the advantage through the entire bout, using its signature solid pack to contain
opposing jammers and carve out openings for Naptown’s Racer Xtasy, Katya Lookin, Noxious Donna, Valerie Hurtinelli, and (double-threat) Ana Slays Ya to lap up the points. The final score of 147 to 51 was testament to the Belles’ hard work leading up to their first away bout—and a sign of more good things to come.

RECAP: Kick Start My Heart!!

The sound of Belles rang loud and strong from the Expo hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on February 14th as the Naptown Rollergirls Warning Belles made their debut. After training for eight months with the veteran Tornado Sirens, the Belles were primed and ready to prove themselves before their derby sisters and nearly 3,000 die-hard NRG fans. Their opponent for the evening was the North East Ohio Rockin Roller Girls that made the drive from the Akron, Ohio area.

Right from the beginning, the Belles showed they were there to play as a solid unit. Blue Messiah bobbed and weaved through the pack that was solidly controlled by a tight, uniform group of Belle blockers. Her blast of speed and the pack’s teamwork showed their hunger to get NRG off to an early lead. The following jams saw Noxious Donna and Katya Lookin put big numbers on the board. By the half the Belles had a solid lead of 40 to 12 over NEO.

After an extended half where the girls of NRG raised over $5,000 to benefit the Young Survivors Coalition, the Warning Belles came out excited to continue the streak of high point-scoring jams. NEO, now rested and ready to go, made it a bit tougher on the Belles in the second half with polished jamming skills displayed by NEO’s Chrissie B. Hynde. The score inched closer as penalties added up for the Belles in the second half, but the pack stuck together with the leadership of Jen X and Ana Slays Ya at pivot. In the end, strong defense, excellent communication, and solid jamming by the young team proved too hard an obstacle to overcome for the Rockin Roller Girls. The Naptown Roller Girl Warning Belles triumphed in front of their home crowd with a final score of 63 to 41.

Here it is, guys and gals. Our very own Warning Belles debut at the State Fair Grounds this Saturday oh so appropriately on Valentine's Day. Come see them take on the North East Ohio Rock 'n' Roller Girls.

It's the first home bout for our brand new flock of fresh meat!!!! Watch your Warning Belles take on The NEO Rock and Rollers from NorthEast Ohio!

Tickets are $11 in advance and $16 (cash only) at the door.

Our bouts are family friendly but it is VERY loud! Our fans are excited! If your child is scared easily by loud noise, a roller derby bout may not be a good place to be. You might also want to consider ear protection for your small children.

To get your rear in gear for the next round of tryouts, there are few things you can do to put yourself ahead of the pack:

Go to an open skate! Or three ... or four! No prior skating
experience is required, but you’ll want to get as much skating practice
in before tryouts as you can.
Here are some things you should aim for:

1. Skating smoothly with long strides

2. Doing cross-overs (one foot crossing over the other) when making a turn

3. Maneuvering around obstacles

4. Being able to make a controlled stop (without running into a wall or falling)

The Warning Belles debut bout is coming up and this time NRG will be doing something a little different for charity. We will be raising money for breast cancer but not only by contributing our after party money, we will be holding an auction as well! Some of the ladies of NRG have been "busted" having plaster casts made of their bosoms, then those casts were given to LOCAL artists to decorate in whatever manner inspired them. The money raised from the auction will go to a local breast cancer charity-The Young Survivors Coalition. If you want to bid in advance at Big Car and no one out bids you at the bout you win the boobie prize, but to be sure you get them it is best to come to the bout on Feb. 14th!

So how can you sneak a peak at these busts before the bout? We are proud to announce we will be showing all of the busts at Big Car Gallery on First Friday Feb.6th! It will be your first chance to start bidding!! You'll also get to see the one and only Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes as they will play later in the evening!

As mentioned in our last post, NRG is auctioning off our bosoms for breast cancer this Valentine's Day for the home debut of NRG's newest team the Warning Belles. I feel the love. Strawberry Jam, Slammy Faye, Ivanna B. Naughty, Sin Lizzie, Velveeta, Cereal Killer, Miso Crazy, Shadi Layne, and Psychadellic Sandy had their breasts cast in plaster, and local artists transformed their raw beauty into art. Unique art for a great cause with derby flavor. What could be better?

The gals will be on display at Big Car gallery for February's First Friday on the 6th. Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes will be laying down their excellent sound. I can't wait. This is going to be a great evening.

Dearest Fans, Family, Volunteers and Friends of NRG -

Thank you for knowing derby…breathing, eating, and sleeping derby. Your support and insights, your attitudes and presence are the heart of the Naptown Experience. As evidenced by our visiting teams, most recently Steel City, we have the best fans around. Your reputation is nation-wide…literally. You know the game, you cheer when you are supposed to…you boo (not that we condone booing) when appropriate. When you are all on your feet when we get lead jammer, it sends chills down our spines. Your dedication to our team is intimidating to derby girls everywhere. We thank you. We are YOUR fans.

Although Saturday’s outcome is not what we had trained for, we learned much. With injuries and shifts of the roster, with new coaches and new rules - one thing is constant; CHANGE. We will always have change; change in players, change in uniforms, change in coaching, change in strategy, change in strengths and weaknesses as a team. The NRG league made a scary commitment at the end of last season. “Play better teams”. This season is packed full of leagues that have existed much longer than we have and pull from much larger skater pools than we do. To become competitive in the national scene, we decided to skate out of our comfort zone and reach to the next tier knowing we would have to rise to the challenge. If we don’t fail occasionally, we aren’t pushing hard enough to become better. No matter our win-loss record come June, we will have learned more about derby and ourselves in those 6 months than many learn in five years. This is a transition year. We are laying the groundwork to ensure we will exist for years to come. The Warning Belles will be playing the best non-WFTDA teams in the region. We have doubled in size, have new training facilities, skaters, coaches and techniques, and once we stabilize, the derby world will be rocked by this “little” team in Indianapolis with the biggest and best fan base in the nation…dare I say world.

In addition to CHANGE, there is another factor that is constant; CONTROL. We can control several things including our attitudes. It is important to us to be the ladies we are under all those stinky pads. We strive to be role models for our fans and their children, role models for other teams that come to see us. Our hospitality and attitude is a reflection of Indianapolis and all feedback we have received is that we are ranked #1...in fans and as hosts. One thing you can be assured of – we will give you sportsmanship to be proud of. We cannot control the refs, but we can control how clean we play and it is evident that we need to work in this area. We cannot control what strategy another team uses, we can only control our response to it.

We expect to learn something at every game and a valuable lesson from Saturday – we need to focus on our strategy. As players are injured or step down, strategies will need to change to continue to up our game.
We have spent hours analyzing Saturday and we will put in many more. We know the strategy of utilizing the split pack and 20 feet rule was effective and legal. We are now working to ensure that we have an arsenal of strategies to combat this and future techniques that don’t play to our speed and brawn.

We promise to continue to play with our hearts on our sleeve and make you proud. We promise to put on a production that rivals all other derby events as our fans have the reputation they deserve; the best. Win or lose, we know that what you love is derby. We will ALWAYS bring you tough bouts as well as passionate and aggressive action. Your continued support and understanding is essential to help us keep our head in the game.
